Old School (also "Old Skool" or "Traditional Tattoo") refers to the traditional Western style American tattooing and shows thick black lines, usually with a limited range of colors (Red, yellow, blue, green); little shade and full colors. Norman Keith Collins, better known as "Sailor Jerry" (1911-1973) is one of the Old School tattoo artists celebrity. Herbert Hoffmann (1919-2010), Amund Dietzel (1891-1974), Bert Grimm (1900-1985) and Bob Shaw (1926-1993), are some of the well known artists that evolved the traditional style.
Some classic examples of poor choice of color or depth, but with great stylistic force:

Nautical (boats, sailors, anchors)
Native American
Pin Up
Mermaids
Swallows
Hearts (usually with names legends, or "Mother", daggers and / or snakes varying the complexity of the design)
Anchors and Eagles
Daggers and roses
